Log Cabin Fiber Arts is pleased to again be able to offer classes at our March 24, 2018 Spin-in and Fiber Festival.

Instructor Kate Painter loves to spin fur from dogs as well as sheep and other fiber critters. She has been spinning  for nearly 40 years! Formerly she raised handspinning sheep for 25 years near Colfax, WA. This was where she started Paradise Fibers, which she sold 12 years ago to the current owners.

Class 1, 9:30am – 12:00pm

Learn to Spin on a Handspindle (Drop spindle)

  • Brief Workshop Description:
  • In this class you will learn how to spin fiber into yarn on a handspindle. This ancient method of handspinning  produced all yarn and hence cloth for millennia. We will experiment with high and low whorl spindles, as techniques are different for these two categories. The instructor has a large collection of handspindles that students may try. Each student will receive an inexpensive handspindle and plenty of fiber of various types and prepared in different ways. Students will learn basic spinning techniques on a handspindle, as well as simple fiber preparation methods, how to hold your fiber supply, and how to ply your handspun yarn on a handspindle.
  • Class fee per student: $20
  • Material fee per student: $20 This fee covers a decent wood handspindle and generous fiber samples for the class.
  • Level of student experience required:   Beginner
  • List of materials, tools, homework, and/or advance preparation required of participants.
  • It is not necessary to bring anything to this class. Everything you need will be supplied, including a handspindle. If you have your own spindle(s) or fiber, feel free to bring them.
