Ophir El-Boher and the DFA Committee has identified the following materials to be used in our EG2 project. Please review the following list and dowload the PDF document to begin collecting materials, experimenting, and ideating with more elements of the design.

Reach out to Marion with any questions.

SUPPLY LIST

Some materials have been defined, and we are starting to collect them! Others will be added as we hone down our design and define the right components for each element of the sculpture.

IMPORTANT NOTE: One main goal of this project, as part of Ophir’s art practice, is TO ELIMINATE WASTE FROM THE WASTE STREAM BY MEANS OF CREATIVE REUSE. Therefore, we request that you gather and donate to this project waste materials only (things that otherwise go into your trash/recycling bins). Please make sure not to buy/acquire/donate/gather any new, still useful materials. Our goal is to reduce waste, not to produce unnecessary waste. Please make sure all donated materials are cleaned and sorted!

  • Unwanted/reused/leftover 1 x 2-inch wood boards for the 6 spinning panels (boards will be cut to specific sizes needed) 12 need to be a minimum 48” long  12 need to be a minimum 10” long
  • Unwanted/reused electrical wire/cable of various types (what we don’t use will be recycled)
  • River hues plastic wrappers/bags (blue, green, aqua, brown?). Large enough to cut strips 18” long by 1”wide for weaving. Example: plastic wrapper around a case of flavored waters, bread wrappers, etc.
  • Used Tyvek envelopes & Acrylic felt (check out tyvek postal envelope pics online) to be manipulated with heat gun application & paint to make rocks. Other synthetic non-woven surfaces may work for this technique too. Please feel free to collect and/or experiment, so that we’ll have a variety.

DESIGN DEVELOPMENT: MORE EXPERIMENTS

We had some incredibly creative ideas coming out of your experimentations with materials and techniques to represent elements of the landscape!! We want more!

Please experiment with design & material concepts for:

MAN-MADE ELEMENTS OF THE LANDSCAPE

  • Wind turbines
  • Trains/train tracks (potential techniques suggested: kumihimo, inkle loom, band looms, card weaving, etc.)
  • Any other man-made element on the landscape that seems important to YOU! (for example, boats, roads, windsurfers, houses, fishing nets, platforms and/or rods, etc.)

NATURAL ELEMENTS

  • Fish tails
  • Any other local wildlife that seems important to YOU! as long as it is depicted in an abstract manner (illustarative depictions of animal parts) such as the horn of bighorn sheep, wings/feathers of eagles, osprey, etc.
  • Local plants can be made out of actual plant material native to the area, or from any reclaimed materials. Best for our purposes will be a small easy-to-make piece that can be replicated, multiplied and repeated to create the landscape
  • Hills, ground, sands possibly waffle weave structure with color & weave application, possible dyes to create this multicolored/multi-texture cut & sew techniques using textured woven fabrics
  • Gravel beds / mussels can be depicted as a surface (gravel beds) or as 3 dimensional elements (mussels)
  • Basalt outcroppings wet felting (or other techniques). For these, the technique must be 3 dimensional in nature.
